Safari FAQ's

Not sure when to travel? Our safari specialists will design the perfect itinerary based on your travel dates, interests, and expectations.

Best Time to Go on Safari

East Africa offers extraordinary safari experiences throughout the year, each season revealing a unique mood, rhythm, and wildlife spectacle. The ideal time to travel depends on your interests, travel style, and the experiences you wish to prioritize.

Dry Season | June – October

Considered the prime safari season, the dry months offer outstanding wildlife viewing. As water sources become scarce, animals gather around rivers and watering holes, making sightings more frequent and rewarding. Clear skies, open landscapes, and comfortable travel conditions create the perfect setting for classic game drives.

This season also aligns with the iconic Great Wildebeest Migration across Kenya’s Masai Mara and northern Tanzania — one of the most awe-inspiring natural events on earth.

Ideal for: Big game viewing, migration safaris, photography, and optimal travel conditions.

Green Season | November – March

The green season breathes life into the savannah, transforming it into a lush and vibrant landscape. Dramatic skies, fresh vegetation, and abundant water attract prolific birdlife, while many animals give birth during this time, offering intimate and heartwarming wildlife encounters. With fewer visitors, safaris feel more exclusive and unhurried.

Ideal for: Scenic and wildlife photography, birdwatching, newborn wildlife sightings, and a quieter safari experience.

Long Rains | April – May

A peaceful and lesser-traveled season, the long rains bring refreshing showers and rich, emerald landscapes. While a few camps close temporarily, many remain open and offer excellent value without compromising quality. Wildlife is still present, and the atmosphere is serene and uncrowded.

Ideal for:
Travelers seeking privacy, value-driven luxury, dramatic landscapes, and a tranquil safari pace.

Best overall wildlife viewing: June – October
Best for migration: July – September
Best for photography & greenery: November – March
Best value & fewer crowds: April – May
Best birding: November – March

Yes. Seasonal changes influence animal movement and behavior. During the dry season, wildlife tends to concentrate around water sources, while the green season offers more dispersed wildlife along with newborn animals and vibrant scenery.

The Great Migration is a continuous, year-round movement. Specific highlights vary by season, with river crossings typically occurring between July and September and calving season taking place from January to February.

Safaris operate year-round. Rainfall is usually short and localized, and many destinations continue to offer excellent wildlife viewing alongside fewer crowds and greener landscapes.

Each season offers distinct photographic opportunities. The dry season is ideal for clear wildlife encounters, while the green season provides dramatic skies, rich colors, and softer natural light.

Yes. The green season and long rains attract fewer visitors, creating a more peaceful and exclusive safari experience while still offering rewarding game viewing.

Tipping while on safari in Kenya, Tanzania, and across East Africa is not mandatory, but it is a thoughtful way to show appreciation for the people who contribute to a safe, comfortable, and memorable journey. The guidelines below reflect widely accepted industry standards used by leading safari operators.

Safari Driver-Guides

Your safari guide plays a central role in your experience, from wildlife tracking and safety to sharing local knowledge and spending long hours with you in the field.

Suggested Tip:

  • USD 10–20 per person, per day
  • USD 20–40 per day for couples or families giving one combined tip

Lodge & Camp Staff

Most safari lodges and camps operate a shared staff tip box, ensuring fair distribution among housekeeping, dining staff, chefs, porters, gardeners, and security teams.

Suggested Tip:

  • USD 5–10 per person, per day

Porters

For assistance with luggage on arrival or departure:

Suggested Tip:

  • USD 1–2 per bag

City Transfers & Short Excursions

For airport transfers or short city movements:

Suggested Tip:

  • USD 5–10 per vehicle

Hot Air Balloon Safari Crew

Balloon safaris involve a large support team. Tipping is customary but always optional.

Suggested Tip:

  • USD 10–20 per person

When to Tip

  • Guides: At the end of your safari
  • Lodge staff: At check-out using the communal tip box
  • Porters & transfer drivers: Immediately after the service

How to Tip

  • Tips may be given in USD, EUR, GBP, or local currency (KES/TZS)
  • USD notes should be 2009 series or newer
  • Guide tips are best presented in an envelope
  • Lodge staff tips should be placed in the communal tip box

Families & Groups

Families or groups typically offer one combined tip to the safari guide. Lodge staff tipping remains per person, per day, using the shared tip box.

Why Tipping Matters

Safari operations are based in remote locations and involve long working hours. While staff receive regular salaries, tips provide direct recognition for exceptional service and personal care.

Special Experiences

For private guiding, photography-focused safaris, extended game drives, or special celebrations, an additional tip is

What to Avoid

  • Giving money or sweets to children.
  • Handing out tips publicly.
  • Feeling pressured to tip beyond your comfort level.

Quick Reference Guide

  • Safari guide: USD 10–20 per person/day
  • Lodge staff: USD 5–10 per person/day
  • Porters: USD 1–2 per bag
  • Transfer drivers: USD 5–10 per vehicle
  • Balloon crew: USD 10–20 per person

Important Note

These are general guidelines only. Tipping is entirely voluntary and should always reflect your level of satisfaction with the service received.

Why aren’t tips included in safari prices or salaries?

Safari services are highly personalized. Including tips in salaries or package prices would remove the guest’s ability to reward service based on individual experience and would increase safari costs due to taxation.

Are safari staff dependent on tips?

No. Safari staff receive regular salaries from their employers. Tips are an additional gesture of appreciation, not a substitute for wages.

Is tipping common across Africa?

Yes. Similar tipping practices are followed in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, and South Africa.
